Sir,

In reply to your No.215 of the 9th.instant, I have the

honour to enclose translation of a despatch from the Viceroy

relative to the "Tweed" incident, and to the question of co-

-operation for the suppression of piracy on the West River.

Tãot'ai Lin and Captain Lu will leave for Hongkong

tomorrow, and I have provided them with a letter of in-

troduction to you.
